- The challenge is open to teams studying courses accredited by the CIOB at an accredited university/college, or universities/college recognised by the CIOB through reciprocity agreements (NBCMA and ACCE).
- Each team shall be made up of 4 members (age irrelevant).
- There should be no more than one postgraduate member in each team.
- Each member of the team will assume the responsibility of a board member of their "company".
- Support may be taken from two non-executive directors.
- Non-executive directors must be under the age of 35. Where possible one non-executive should be a member of the local CIOB Novus group.
- Non-executive directors can mentor and advise the team. They must not actively participate in the team’s decision-making process.
- Non-executive directors will not participate in the Finals.
- All members of the team will be required to register as CIOB student members. Membership for student is free.

- All team are required to trial MERIT.
The trialling phase is from November 2013 to January 2014. Trialling is an important learning phase. It provides access to the MERIT tutorial and software. It allows the team to explore the issues of the company and financial management, as well develop their initial strategy. - The first phase consists of 6 Rounds, running from 1 February – 30 March 2014.
- As the end of each Round a league table will be produced of each team's performance
- At the end of the first phase, the top six teams plus their tutor will be invited to the finals at a venue to be confirmed in July 2014.
- Teams will be required to provide their own laptop computer for the Finals.
- The Finals will comprise of a further eight rounds within a more competitive environment.
- At the end of each round the companies combined performance score will be published in a league table.
- The cost to register:
£295.00 (+ VAT if within the UK) per team for upto and including 5 teams
£235.00 (+ VAT if within the UK) per team for all subsequent teams - The CIOB will finance the travel cost of the finalists and their university tutor to the Finals.
- Individuals are responsible for financing and securing their own visas. The CIOB will supply a supporting letter to accompany the visa application.
